My dear cousin Maya was in the middle of making me a voice note on WhatsApp, telling me her four children were hanging out in the mamad (safe room) watching Full House while she was taking a moment of calm to do some dishes and suddenly mid sentence she says, “siren have to go love you!” At that moment my red alert app went off too. And then a moment later she sends me this video she took.
When the video comes from someone you love and not from the news (peppered with media bias), it hits the heart in an even more profound way. It isn’t that videos like this from other war zones don’t make us feel helpless, or don’t make us feel sad or angry, but when it’s happening to YOUR people, right over their homes where their kids are watching TV, it just hits differently.
