Years ago I was leading a high school service-learning program and the teens wanted to dive deep into conflict resolution. They researched a few organizations that worked in that field and one they chose to
investigate more is called Seeds of Peace. This group brings young people from conflict regions together into an immersive camp experience. I reached out to their leadership and asked them to put me in touch with one of their Muslim alumni who may be interested in speaking with the teens. During our Skype (yes, that long ago), the Egyptian Muslim student shared that he believes that media bias is the leading perpetrator of ongoing conflict. Ever since that moment, I have really had my eyes open to how media bias plays out (significant in headlines as much as in commentary), and I push myself to explore many sources when trying to discern my own viewpoint on an issue.
The following are resources I use to gather a broad spectrum of news, opinion, and perspective on the current Israel-Hamas war. I believe we need to be critical thinkers, explore a pluralism of ideas, and discern for ourselves what resonates, what we find to be meaningful, and what we can trust as “fact” vs. “propaganda.” As a result, I have included sources I may never align with, but I find important to inform my perspective.
The document is divided into sections including:
- Peace-Activist organizations to explore their statements, their work, and synchronous briefings
- Counter-Terrorism organizations
- News outlets with mostly unbiased or balanced perspectives
- Muslim leaders, academics or journalists who are anti-extremism to follow on social media
- Biased outlets from different views
- Israel-based military reporting
